Weekend Exclusive | Sticking to a particular genre is not for me: Kamya Punjabi

One of the finest and boldest actress on the small screen, Kamya Punjabi  has always made her presence felt through her portrayal of negative characters in various soaps. Her roles such as Kiran in Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani, Sindoora in Banoo Mein Teri Dulhann, Kamya in Who Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki are proof enough of  her ability to handle negative roles .

After giving the genre of comedy a try with her roles in Comedy Circus and Color’s Nautanki the Comedy Theatre, Kamya is back in a new avatar playing a negative character once again.

Adgully interacted with Kamya Punjabi to understand her  rationale behind playing negative characters on screen and also to learn what is different about her new character ‘Daya Maayi’.

“When you talk about negative characters it’s not as if  I have not done any positive character since  my character  Uttara for Maryada: Lekin Kab Tak is something I have really liked being associated with. It’s difficult to say which particular character is close to my heart because as an actor I’ve been loving every character that I’ve played,” said Kamya.

Kamya is of the opinion that as an actor it’s not fair to judge a certain character because an actor’s work is to act and no one can judge their own work.

Kamya was last seen on Colors show Nautanki the Comedy Theatre and has also worked in Comedy Circus. When asked about the reason behind this move, she said, “I love experimenting and sticking to a particular genre is not something that I have  in mind. So whenever I get a chance to experiment with new characters and roles I am in for that.”

On coming to her new show, Life Ok’s Do Dil Ek Jaan, where she is playing the role of ‘Daya Maayi’ we asked her to brief us about the same. “Daya Maayi is a woman having two sons, one stays abroad and the other one (lead actor  Ayaz Ahmed) stays with her.  Daya owns the whole property where she stays and is a very tough woman to deal with,”said Kamya.

For the role of Daya Maayi, Kamya has experimented a lot with her attire and her looks. She will be seen wearing two nose rings and will play the role of a modern mother of a neighbourhood bully.

Sharing about her new role she said“When I got an offer for this show I was  really excited on hearing about the character role which I am playing. She is not the regular vamp nor related to any character that I’ve played in past. So viewers are going to see me in a new avatar.”

Concluding the talk, when asked what she loves to do the most she said, “I am a selfish actor and whenever I am in front of the camera I like to capture the frame.”

Do Dil Ek Jaan is all set to hit  television screens starting  3rd June 2013, at 9 pm only on Life Ok.
