Tata Sky: Redefining Workspace for Employees

Tata Sky has once again pushed boundaries and challenged the status quo when it came to the setting up of their new office. The company strongly believes in the fact that it is the people who drive the progress of the company and contribute to the high-performance culture. Embodying this belief, Tata Sky has revamped the setup of their Head Office at Kalina in Mumbai and have broken the monotony by offering an inclusive environment in their new office that spells ‘empowering’. It has incorporated possible avenues of comfort and relaxation, leading to enhanced productivity and making it more relatable for employees and ultimately contributing to the overall business goals.

The place where an employee spends most of the day working is office. The design of the workplace can impact employees’ performance, mood and efficiency. Hence the overarching theme kept in mind while designing the office was ‘Be Your Own C.E.O’. Where the abbreviation C.E.O. stands for Collaboration-Experimentation-Ownership. The company believes that each employee needs to be given the opportunity of being a CEO which then allows a liberated mind to come up with innovations and execute them with passion and responsibility. This is how Tata Sky has managed to consistently build innovative and pioneering products & services as a Content Distribution Platform.

Sangram Chavan, Chief Human Resources Officer, Tata Sky said, “At Tata Sky we always prioritized the well-being of our most important assets - employees. We hence believe in nurturing the concept of 'Be your own CEO' with just the right amount of guidance and a collaborative environment as we now have.”

Here is a glimpse of what the new office space looks like:

Open-door Policy – The organization encourages an open-door policy, where people can talk shop with anyone in the system without being apprehensive at the organization levels. The office is devoid of cubicles or cabin barring meeting rooms. Which means any employee can walk up to a senior or even the CEO’s desk and discuss ideas with them. Hierarchy is a word which ceases to exist in Tata Sky’s dictionary.

Hot Desking – Tata Sky now follows the culture of hot desking, which means employees having no set workspace and instead set up camp at any empty desk. This induces discussions among people from various departments, teams and sharing of thoughts and ideas becomes second nature. This in turn helps them to think with a complete perspective when discussing innovative and execution-able ideas taking collaboration to the next level.

Collaborative Corners – Tata Sky believes that organizations need both operational excellence—and innovation—to succeed. While wi-fi enabled projectors, sound proof phone booths and zero land line phones bring in operational efficiency, a lively interior breeds healthy interactions and positive atmosphere. With growing number of employees and the need to have a high level of engagement, Tata Sky has built interesting collaborative corners where people can feel relaxed, work solo or have discussions with their teams in a highly stimulating environment. Vibrant colors for furniture, unique swings and ottomans for sit-outs and some standing work stations bring the concept alive.

Chill out zone A pleasant and quiet place with ample natural light coming through the end to end French windows – works well to take a break from technology at work. There is ample space to chill out in office. The office space is strewn with relaxing chairs, pool table, table tennis table, carom board, play station portable and televisions which serve as a stress buster enabling employees to get back to work with full energy and zeal.
