Spirit W | I'm thoroughly enjoying every bit of it: Spin Communique's Kanchan Kalra

Kanchan Kalra, an emotive Writer, Liberated Dancer, Amateur Cook, Wandering Traveler, Unwise Lover, Carefree Dreamer has always loved knowing new people and interacting with different minds and is glad that life has been pretty nice to her.

A new entrant in the media industry, she works for a PR firm, as a Media Executive at Spin Communique, and that obviously gives her amazing opportunities to interact with so many people. It’s a great deal of work and effort. Other than her job, she likes spending time with books, films or music with Romance being her favorite genre. She has also worked as an Assitant to the Director for various Commercial Plays and Musicals and aspires to be a Film Maker.

According to Kanchan, the two things about this stream that made her pick up this as her profession; firstly, it’s a great networking platform, one of the very few industries wherein you get to meet and interact with such a huge no. of people and secondly, she enjoys writing and one of the important parts of this job include content development. “Public Relations is clearly one of the fastest growing industries today and undoubtedly has a bright future,” she believes.

When asked about any kind of challenge faced in this industry, she told us that apparently she did not. Kanchan believes that the media industry is extremely friendly and there are no issues if you know your job well but there are a few protocols which one is expected to follow. “You’re good to go once you get familiar with the people you have to interact with,” she added.

On asking to point out some of her work that she is very proud of, Kanchan answered saying, “I can’t really choose one but when you see your client covered in any publication, it fills you with a sense of pride and accomplishment. This is what you look forward to when you come to work. It boosts up your confidence and it’s a different high in itself.”

“But if I had to point something down, it would be a grand media turnout at one of my events or a double page spread coverage for a client,” she added.

Well! Of-course it was too early to ask but due to curiosity we asked: do you feel any kind of prejudice in this domain? She said, “No.. This industry is very welcoming for anyone and everyone. Although it takes a while when you’re new but I guess that is the case with any industry. After all, your duration in a specific industry does hold a certain amount of credibility too.”

“I haven’t thought that far yet. I’m taking it as it comes. I’ve been around for a while and I’m thoroughly enjoying every bit of it,” she said on asking, about where does she see herself five years down the line. She intends to leave next year for further studies to London and maybe once she will be back, she might be on the other side of the game: The client end!

Being an entrant, she feels that Communication is her biggest strength. She says, “I believe in any job if you can put your point through the way you’d like it to be perceived, your job is halfway done! And in a field like PR, you have to learn and grow into a style of communication that is likeable and clear at the same time. This does not mean you become pretentious, but infact the quality grows on you.”

At Spin, she currently, handle content development and media relations and her expertise lies in Media Management, Idea Initiation, Creative Writing, Client Servicing and Content Integration. Though she is a new entrant in the media space but has been a choreographer since past many years. She has choreographed for various shows and organized programs and conducted private dance classes for a long period of time. | By Aanchal Kohli [aanchal@adgully.com]
