Mumbai Labour Court intervenes on behalf of People magazine employees

The Outlook Group recently announced their move to discontinue their licences with international magazines, People, Marie Claire and Geo. As this public statement appeared on the BestMediaInfo.com site on July 26, 2013 over hundred employees of the said magazines were clueless about their future with no written communication from the management confirming the same. But according to sources the management had informed their employees of this decision verbally.

Keeping their best interests in mind, the 17 member editorial team of People India led by editor Saira Menezes approached the Labour Court Mumbai to intervene on their behalf on July 30, 2013. Taking immediate action the court has restrained the management of Outlook Group from terminating the employees of People India till the due process of law is followed.

The court presided by P K Chitnis has issued an order directing Outlook to maintain a status quo with regard to it’s employees services. He said, “Respondents are directed to maintain status quo and services of the complainants may not be terminated without following due procedure of law.”

Copies of the court’s orders have been sent to the respondents of Outlook management viz. President Indranil Roy and Editorial Chairman Vinod Mehta.

The petition was filed by employees of People on Tuesday morning and Advocate Anees S. Kazi appeared on behalf of the complainants.
