Sport18's BSA Hercules India Cyclothon Mumbai 2011 gathers immense response

The enormous support of Mumbai for the "BSA Hercules India Cyclothon ' Mumbai 2011' has reinforced the city's commitment to a greener and cleaner tomorrow. Today, over 6,000 cycling enthusiasts participated in various races as part of the mega cycling event. Organized jointly by Sport18, the sports marketing division of Network18 group and TI Cycles, this event was Mumbai's largest mass mobilization cycling event.

"BSA Hercules India Cyclothon ' Mumbai 2011' witnessed active participation across a wide cross-section of the society and the best of national cyclists competing for top honors. This included 118 participants for the Elite National Race, 2871 participants for LG Green Ride, 1632 participants for the Corporate Ride,1651 participants for Dabur Nutrigo Total Amateur's Ride for Health and 768 for the Junior Ride.

The first ride of the Cyclothon, the Elite National Race was flagged off by Gajan Galla, President Cycling Federation of India. The total prize money for this race was 5 Lakhs. The race saw a close finish with Amandeep from the Indian Railways winning first place with 28 points (Prize: Rs. 1.5 Lakhs) and Rakesh Kumar also from the Indian Railways coming in second with 12 points (Prize: Rs.80,000). Sachin Kumar from Delhi won the third place with 11 points (Prize: Rs. Rs. 60,000).

Lending his support to the initiative was the Honorable Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan who inaugurated the MMRDA cycling track. In addition to the participants from all walks of life, including amateur cyclists, cycling enthusiasts, working professionals, housewives and school children, the "BSA Hercules India Cyclothon ' Mumbai 2011' also had the youngest Khan of Bollywood and generation Y actor Imran Khan present on the occasion in support of charity of animal welfare. In a symbolic celebration of the spirit of cycling, a special ceremonial lap was held around Bandra Kurla Complex as the MMRDA cycling track was also inaugurated. Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria, F1 racer Karun Chandok, Milind Deora were amongst others seen at the event riding. Priya Dutt and Imran Khan inaugurated the Junior ride.

Dr. D. Raghuram, President TI Cycles of India said, "The overwhelming response from Mumbaikars has proven that Mumbai is indeed India's foremost cycling city. The cycling culture here is becoming quite strong and we intend to further strengthen it by emphasizing upon the fitness and environmental benefits of cycling. Year-on-year, the Cyclothon has received tremendous response from cycling enthusiasts across the country and we are committed to taking this event to newer heights in the coming years."

For "BSA Hercules India Cyclothon ' Mumbai 2011', registrations and participations had poured in from a range of institutions such as NCC and the Army India Inc. also showed its solidarity and corporates like Reliance Industries, NSE, Citibank and UTI were present in fill force.

India Cyclothon - India's largest celebration of cycling has left its memorable footprints in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore Pune and Chandigarh over the last 12 months. This initiative by Sport18 nurtures the sport and grows the love for cycling in India. At a time when global warming is sounding the death knell of the planet, the Cyclothon reinforces that cycling can be the most ideal solution for its rejuvenation.
