Snapdeal appoints Amitava Ghosh

Third start-up CTO to join Snapdeal’s technology leadership team

Snapdeal, India’s largest online marketplace, today announced the appointment of Amitava Ghosh as Vice President – Engineering. In his new role, Amitava will lead the development of intuitive technology solutions for ease of accessibility and enhanced user experience on the marketplace. Amitava, comes with over 17 years of experience in building highly scalable web based products and platforms for consumer internet and enterprises.

Amitava has spent several years working for a diverse set of organizations, both in India and USA, across large Internet companies, medium strength organizations and Silicon Valley start-ups. Prior to his appointment at Snapdeal, Amitava was the Chief Technology Officer at Taxiforsure before the company’s acquisition by OLA Cabs. Previously, he headed the India Engineering team of Tribune Digital Ventures (TDV). During his stint at TDV, Amitava played a pivotal role in building the company’s technology team from scratch. In his leadership, the company also launched Newsbeat, a mobile application which provides personalized audio streams of news stories. Amitava has also had a decade long stint at Yahoo where he was responsible for building platforms and user experiences for listings, media verticals, communities & Social products. Amitava holds an MTech degree in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Amitava will work out of the company’s technology innovation centre in Bangalore. Currently, a 200 people strong team works out of this office. The company plans to double this by the end of this year. Customer experience has been a key focus area for Snapdeal. The company recently launched initiatives like 4 hr deliveries and 90 minutes reverse pick up to further enhance customer experience on its platform. Amitava will play a key role in strengthening this further, backed by robust technology solutions.

The technology team at Snapdeal is currently 1000 people strong and the company looks at doubling it by the end of this year. The company has significantly ramped up its technology leadership team and has hired senior leaders from across the globe.  Anand Chandrasekaran ex-CPO Bharti Airtel, Gaurav Gupta, formerly the India Head of Scalearc – a Bay area start-up and Bhuvan Gupta, ex-CTO, BSB Portal (JV between BSB and Yahoo Japan) have all joined the Snapdeal family as core members of the technology team.
