MIB monitors misleading advertisements

According to the Indian Government, inspite of creating awareness and putting in a place a mechanism to monitor breaches, there has been misleading advertisements in the media including the Television platform.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Rajyavardhan Rathore told the Parliament recently that there were 641 complaints received regarding misleading ads in 2015 and the numbers has risen to 3,302 in 2017.

According to Rathore, an advisory was issued in the year 2014 to all TV channels in order to not telecast advertisements that were found to be violating provisions of Cable Television Network Rules.

Rathore explained that the Department of Consumer Affairs had informed that it has launched portal ‘Grievance Against Misleading Advertisements’ (GAMA) to handle the complaints relating to misleading advertisements. Further, he mentioned that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI), which is a self regulatory body of the advertiseming industry that processes complaints of misleading advertisements in print and electronic media as received on GAMA portal.
