Adani Wilmar reiterates its commitment towards a plastic free environment

In an unprecedented industry move, Adani Wilmar Limited, the largest seller of edible oil in the country, has replaced the packaging of its popular brand Fortune to make it completely recyclable. The FMCG Company has taken this initiative to support the Government of India’s agenda of reducing wastage of plastic. 1 litre pouches of Fortune edible oil has been replaced with recyclable packaging nationally. Adani Wilmar is the first edible oil company to introduce recyclable packaging of oil pouches in India.

Adani Wilmar has an exclusive agreement with Ahmedabad based Vishakha Polyfab Private Limited (VPPL) to avail ‘sole usage rights’ of introducing and marketing eco-friendly packaging across the edible oil industry. The company has sourced plastic films made of unique formulation of polyethylene (PE) resins from its supplier Vishakha Polyfab, to create sustainable PE laminate solution. Adani Wilmar sources nearly 300 MT of plastic films for packaging per month and a kilogram of film produces approximate 130 pouches. The estimated count touches nearly 47 crore pouch/litres of oil per annum being packed sustainably.

The innovative formulation of polyethylene (PE) resin has been certified by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), an agency under the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India. The certificate of endorsement states that the co-extruded multilayer film can be recycled. The new recyclable pouch has also passed the company’s internal laboratory tests covering a DRAT Impact test, a drop test and an ink adhesion test.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Angshu Mallick, COO, Adani Wilmar said, “As a group we have always had a strong commitment towards sustainable environmental practices. We thus take pride, as Adani Wilmar is the first in the edible oil industry to use recycled plastic pouches for the packaging of Fortune, our largest selling edible oil brand. Consumers of today have an increased awareness and willingness to undertake initiatives that help in reducing their overall ecological footprint, and we believe our move to recyclable packaging will further empower them.  We are working towards extending this recyclable packaging across our other brands nationally.”

Adani Wilmar’s portfolio comprises of cottonseed, soyabean, sunflower, rice bran and groundnut oils. In addition to Fortune, brands such as Aadhar, Kings, Fryola, Raag Gold and Alpha have garnered a healthy market share. Every edible oil pouch carries a prominent, enlarged international symbol for recycling symbolized by curved, folded arrows forming a triangle in the front of every pouch.

Adani Wilmar exports to 19 countries across the world, making a mark in the global market too. After having dominated the industry as a numerouno producer of edible oils, the company has already expanded its portfolio adding consumer essentials such as soya nuggets, basmati rice, besan, pulses and vanaspati.
