Stringent provisions proposed against misleading ads: Prime Minister Modi

In a bid to empower consumers in new markets, the Government has made the new Consumer Protection Bill its top priority. The proposed Act lays great emphasis on consumer empowerment. Speaking at the two-day International Conference on Consumer Protection for East, South, South East and Asian Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that it is the consumer that helps markets grow and trade expand.

He drew attention of the gathering to the traditions and laws of ancient India as old as 2,500 years and Vedic period, when laws existed for preventing unfair trade practices, abuses and adulteration of products.

While affirming that protection of consumer interests is a priority of the Government, Modi said, “Rules are being simplified to ensure that consumer grievances are redressed in a time-bound manner and at least possible cost. Stringent provisions are proposed against misleading advertisements. A Central Consumer Protection Authority with executive powers will be constituted for quick remedial action.”

He further said, “Moving beyond consumer protection, New India will have best consumer practices and consumer prosperity.”

“In India, consumer is considered as God in trade premises. ‘Grahak Devo Bhava’ is the dictum for consumer satisfaction,” Modi reiterated. He mentioned several important efforts taken by his government across various sectors like Housing, Energy, Standards, Healthcare, pharmaceuticals and medical devices and procedures that has resulted in financial benefits to consumers.

Modi also drew attention to demonetisation and the GST regime that introduced a new business culture, which will ultimately bring down prices for consumers. “Redressal system that is efficient is the corner stone of democracy,” he asserted.
