Mid-day turns the spotlight on visual disability with new comic strip

Mid-day, the newspaper from Jagran Prakashan, is set to rejig its comics and games section. And a new star addition is the launch of what could be India’s first comic strip on visual disability.

Titled, ‘You & Eye’, it is a collaborative effort between Mid-day; Ponnappa, a Pune-based cartoonist; former journalist Krishna Warrier; and Dr Sam Taraporevala, Director at the Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC). Dr Taraporevala suffers from 100 per cent blindness and has led the sociology department of St Xavier’s College for two decades.

Dr Taraporevala and Warrier will provide fodder for situations that the visually challenged often find themselves in, while Ponnappa will give it his brand of wit. “Mid-day Editor Tinaz Nooshian was excited about completing the triangle, and here we are,” said Ponnappa of the comic strip that will kick off in the paper’s Sunday (May 1, 2016) edition as part of a rejig of the tabloid’s leisure section.

Sandeep Khosla, CEO, Mid-day, commented, “To constantly innovate is our endeavour. The new avatar of the Timepass section is a step towards offering the best in content to our readers.”

The section will also see the introduction of Dr Love, an expert who solves relationship riddles in a confusing digital age; a brand new set of puzzles and games; a crossword that tests readers’ grasp of Mumbai; an environment comic by Rohan Chakravarty, along with the popular Bollywood crossword and daily horoscope.
