'Guthi' plans a similar show; Viacom18 issues public notice

In a latest development, rumour mills are buzzing that Sunil Grover who played the quirky and witty character of ‘Guthi’ on Comedy Nights with Kapil being aired on Colors, is now in talks with a rival GEC Star Plus, to give birth to a new show of a similar format.

‘Guthi’ as a character was probably more popular than the host or any other character of Comedy Nights with Kapil. The news of Sunil Grover’s, (who played Guthi) exit from popular top-rated satire spread like wild fire, leaving it to the industry and viewers to hunt for reasons for his exit. Adgully had earlier reported about his exit. Following Grover’s exit, other esteemed publications reported about this with reasons supporting the move but there were no confirmations made on any by the actor. It is also learned and confirmed to Adgully that the stand-up comedian is officially as part of ZEE Rishtey awards.

With the latest rumours around, when Adgully tried to touch-base with both the parties involved in the issue, while Sunil Grover remained unavailable for any comments, officials from Star Plus, it was stated that, “It is too early to talk about anything’.

Now, in what may turn out to be a conflict for the two broadcasters, Viacom 18, issued a public notice in certain publications stating that it had the ownership rights on the intellectual property of the artiste (not named) and any adaptations of the character and or the show. It also threatened legal action against any entity that infringes with the rights of the "Comedy Nights with Kapil".

It is now a wait and watch game for ‘Guthi’ lover, while producers and broadcasters wait to seal-a-deal with the artist.
