Exclusive | The Square Peg Films focuses on quality of production: Founders

Counted as one of the youngest and popular choices in strategy development & video production, The Square Peg Films (TSPF), founded in 2013, is essentially based in Mumbai. The company is known for managing everything from conceptualization to execution to video production and YouTube Channel Management and has been founded by digital enthusiasts – Praveen Sharma and Pooja Mishra.

Sharma, the Co-Founder & Director, TSPF, has over half a decade of experience in the industry. He began his career as the creative head and business development associate of ODigma followed by a year long stint at Windchimes Communications Pvt. Ltd. He has directed few short films as well, before starting his own firm - The Square Peg Films. Mishra, Co-founder and Director, TSPF started her career as a marketing consultant with Infosys and then moved to join Brandmovers India as a Senior Social Media Manager. She has been an active blogger for a long time now. She also free-lanced as a copywriter before starting her own firm The Square Peg Films.

In exclusive interaction with Adgully, Praveen Sharma and Pooja Mishra, Founders of The Square Peg Films, shared with us the company’s journey, their expertise and much more…

While being a young production house brings along a multiple opportunities, it definitely brings along risk and challenges. Speaking about the challenges Sharma said, “One needs to work that extra mile to win client’s trust, ‘coz there’s not a lot of work doing the talking, nor experience paving the way. It’s all about conviction. Having said that, being a young company also gives you a lot of freedom to experiment, take risks, and give your all, since there’s nothing to lose. Every project brings along learning’s and monotony is at bay.”

Speaking of picking up a domain as niche and young as video production, Mishra explained, “Like a picture says a thousand words, we thought videos say a lot more. We both have worked in digital agencies, opportunities came and we did explore our skills as a part of a few projects. The preparation for launching our own venture began and both of us started making a few shortfilms and also pursued a diploma in practical film making to hone our skills. And, roughly 11 months ago, we founded TheSquare Peg Films. All along the journey has been quite eventful, as pretty soon we bagged a few prestigious projects and the company has been scaling good heights.”

Beyond the personal ambitions and interest of venturing into videos, TSPF noticed a gap in the market, which was created owing to lack of smart and more evolved production houses that make process of video production easier and not otherwise. Thus, came into being TSPF, a full service video production house, mentioned Mishra.

On asking about the expertise of The Square Peg Films, echoing each other’s thoughts, they said, “Though we serve as end-to-end video solution providers, in our opinion, our strength is in pre-production, which includes conceptualization and scripting. Further, our background and instincts give us an edge over others when it comes to shoot based content.”

At TSPF they offer Concept and Strategy, Video Production and YouTube Management to your clients. Speaking at length on the same, Sharma said, “We are not just a production house that helps brands or agencies execute their ideas in terms of videos, but also a video production agency that has the capability to pick up briefs, understand the marketing objectives behind them, conceptualize ideas and then bring them to life. This is the reason why our clientele has a good mix of both brands and agencies”.

Apart from doing a lot of projects, which are meant for digital, YouTube management is a service that TSPF provide as an add-on if the client needs our assistance in distribution of the content too.

Speaking about the overall scenario of production houses in India, the industry’s growth, and TSPF’s ranking, Mishra said, “Furthermore, India as a market has just started evolving when it comes to use of videos as content, and consequently there’s a lot of opportunity. The Square Peg Films is still growing with strong focus on quality of the content that it produces. We have our set of strengths that helps us stand out and bring the best thing forward. It is in our approach, the amount of heart we put into it, and the very fact that we are making a dent”.

Further explaining as to how TSPF’s is different from other production houses, they stated, “Production Houses are often the place-to-be for execution, but The Square Peg Films also conceptualizes some great content, and hence is a one-stop thing for video requirements. Another thing that sets us apart is our range. Mostly, there are two categories of production houses, ones that do TVCs, and the others that are into corporate films and animation. We do it all. In the past 11 months of our operation we have done a TVC, plenty of animation videos, and international assignments as well.”

Sharma and Mishra inform us that currently, there are 12 people working with TSPF on a full-time basis, while there are a few others that keep coming in on project basis. These individuals primarily contribute in pre and post production stages like conceptualization, scripting, animation, sound mixing and so on and are based in Lucknow, Mumbai & Delhi.

Sharing some of the milestones achieved by the company so far, a delighted Sharma said, “One, we have a set of great clients: PUMA, MTS India, Oakley India, Aegis Global, Thomas Cook, Lipton Ice Tea, SAB TV, Kokuyo Camlin, Rediff.com, and many more. (Most of them happy) Secondly, our work has been appreciated at the Abbys and lastly, the ability to survive so far and the zeal to go on!

At present, TSPF is working on a short film for one of its clients, which is going to be about their journey and success, but more as a film rather than an interview or direct conversation. Very recently the company has wrapped up an interesting video campaign with Oakley India, featuring Virat Kohli which will be out anytime soon. [By Ranjana Gupta| Twitter: @RGrightsreserve]
