Adgully Exclusive | Do not go for things just because they are the 'hot selling' items: Designer Nishka Lulla

Following her mother's steps, quite literally, Nishka Lulla, daughter of renowned fashion designer Neeta Lulla, opened the Lakme Fashion Week Winter / Festive 2011 at the Talent Box, a new concept introduced for the first time ever, the place where the real business happens.

Nishka's collection named 'India at heart', was a very colorful ensemble of kalamkari and peacock motifs skillfully fused with western silhouettes of lehenga sari's and kaftans, an elated Nishka came across as a satisfied artist whose work was accepted and appreciated by all.

"The unique thing of my collection is that, it's very vibrant, young and comfortable, especially something that teenagers would like to wear, since I cater to that age group."

Nishka believes that her being a fashion designer and stylist was an unconscious decision."When young, I used to get quite excited about what and how my mother used to work, and I always loved dressing up and shopping. Put all together and here I am" she quipped.

A major highlight in career was when she won the Creative Excellence Award for the Barbie all Doll'd up show at the Lakme Fashion Week 2009 where 150 leading Indian designers participated to design an outfit for Barbie for her 50th Anniversary. Katrina Kaif was dressed in Lulla's winning design, which was a multi-hued mini dress, with an Indian twist. Currently concentrating on her own brand, "Nishkk", she has had associations with brands, like Provogue where she was the fashion consultant.

Speaking about her road path and the way ahead, Nishka was of the opinion that, the brand Nishkk has matured as she has. From a young, trendy and 'teenage centric' line to a more matured collection. "Though I am not too ambitious, I want to expand my brand, have out stores that are easily accessible, and continue doing what I love the most", she said.

Talking about style and clothes, "One should wear clothes that he / she is comfortable in and will feel confident and pretty. Do not go for things just because they are the 'hot selling items'", she suggested.

"Having someone in your family from a similar occupational background, fashion here, is a double-edged sword", she said, "One, it's a support in terms of basics and any information one would need on the professional front. But on the other hand, it's challenging to make our own space and mark and move out of the umbrella brand, in this case my mother Neeta Lulla", she believed.

With some of the popular young actresses as her 'muses' in her styling kitty, Nishka is looking forward to style the vivacious Genelia D'Souza and southern beauty Tamannaah in the near future. | By Ankita Tanna [ankita(at)adgully.com]
